Nazeemaa didn’t always have a passion for poetry, or so she thought. The love she has for writing poems goes beyond what her memory serves. According to her grandmother, she began writing poems at the age of six, which makes her a bit of an expert on the topic. So we sat down with Nazeemaa to learn all about the dos and don’ts of writing poetry for social media.
Make sure your poems are coming from YOU
One thing you should always maintain when posting any content on social media, is authenticity. “It’s hard to maintain being like someone else. The people who are meant to see your content will see it.” You will relate more to your reader if you are being honest and genuine.
Your poems are not supposed to touch every single person
”I have no problem with short poems but I don’t like how vague people are making the ‘Instagram poems.’ They are writing them to be applicable to everyone and now the idea of poetry is being misconstrued. Your poems are not supposed to touch everyone.” It’s okay if your poems only relate to a small group or even just you. Don’t sacrifice your poem just to hit all demographics, focus on your niche.
Don’t just put out content that you know will succeed
“It used to be super important to me to only put out what I knew would succeed. But that gets tiring and I realized I wasn’t enjoying it as much, it took away the fun.” Nazeema recalls the frustration and stress of posting the perfect picture and archiving it shortly after because it didn’t get enough likes. It takes the fun out of social media and creating, so feel free to post whatever you want (without worrying about the views/likes).
Try to throw in your own twist when creating content that has already been done
When it comes to what content gets the most engagement, Nazeemaa says it’s usually the trending content that everyone has already done. “It sucks but it’s usually the thing that everyone else is already doing. I try to make it unique if it’s already been done before.” Adding your own flair to a trend can make you stand out on social media. Check out what’s popular and find a way to add your style!
