This week’s New Celebrity is a fashion icon, artist, and poet. Through engagement, word-of-mouth advertising, and keeping up with trends Nazeemaa has built her unique brand. Her Instagram started as a way to share what she was doing and wearing with her friends. Now it has developed into a channel to show a broader audience what Nazeemaa has to offer to the worlds of poetry, fashion, and art. Keep reading to find out how Nazeemaa grew her audience, her best tips for being a successful influencer, and how important it is to have your own style.
In the beginning, Nazeemaa’s Instagram was more personal. For her, it was just a way to keep in touch with her friends and share her work with them. After a while, she started to grow her audience by networking with her friends. “Most of my followers have been ‘tell-a-friend.” The friends of her friends would recommend her account to their friends and the cycle continued till Nazeemaa amassed a wide audience of over 5,000 social media followers. Using a sprinkle of word-of-mouth advertising, Nazeemaa was able to grow her audience into the thousands. For aspiring influencers, it is often hard to get those first few followers, but we all have friends and family so why not use them to help you grow. Growth through word of mouth can be very effective in getting an influencer a larger platform. This kind of growth can be exponential because it starts with just five of your closest buddies and can expand to a network of friends, family, and followers who are all recommending your content.
Once you have grown a following through your friends, it can be hard to figure out how to keep their attention or attract the attention of more people. Nazeemaa has figured out through trial and error that what usually gets the most attention is content that’s being done by other creators. “It’s usually things other people are already doing.” For example, Nazeema has noticed that copying the fashion of a well-known person and adding her own style can get more eyeballs on her account. “An outfit that looks similar to something a celebrity or someone else who’s worn it- will probably do well.” But of course, it isn’t wise to just copy other influencers. That is why Nazeemaa recommends you should take their content and twist it in a way that makes it your own. “Everything is kinda like what’s unique, but has already been done… That’s what usually does the best.” This method of putting your unique spin on what’s popular will help attract those broad audiences and keep them coming back. Nazeema knows exactly the content that her following is looking for. “If I do something completely out of the box, people have to decide if they like it… If it’s something they’ve seen before it’s like ‘I know this works and I like it.”
Nazeema uses her platform to promote her poetry. This kind of content is very niche and can segment your audience. Poetry only attracts those who are interested “people who are not into poetry will listen, but they won’t be like ‘I gotta tell somebody about this’”. While this can be a good way to attract a niche audience if you are looking to create a broader one it may not help growth.
Another important aspect of social media life is engagement. It is crucial to create content that is known to get interaction with the audience. In her early days on Instagram, Nazeemaa focused on engagement a lot. “Initially it was super important. I would make content specifically if I knew it was gonna do well.” But some influencers who put in the hard work may feel a bit of burnout. ”It became really tiring and I realized I wasn’t enjoying it as much.” This is why Nazeema has decided to take a break from social media. “I’ve been taking a break to enjoy life.” It can be easy to tire yourself out on keeping up with all your social media accounts. That is why it is important to take a step back every once in a while to focus on yourself and your enjoyment. This way you can come back with a reinvigorated passion for your work. This is something that Nazeema advocates for frequently. Find out more about Nazeema’s goal to educate and inform others on mental health issues in her article “Unapologetically Poetic”.
Nazeema has developed her own style on Instagram. She has grown her audience through word of mouth and kept them engaged with content that is popular but unique to her. This has culminated into her signature brand, “Chill but still a big deal”. She is all about creating basic stuff that is just a bit different. Nazeemaa advises future influencers not just to copy others on the platform. “copying is very short term success… It’s not authentic and it’s very hard to maintain being like someone else.” She says not to worry too much about your audience. ”the people who are meant to see it will always see it.” In the end, Nazeemaa’s words of wisdom for those aspiring influencers is to “just do you”.
